Now, I'm not a canon purist by any means (or maybe I am, who knows) but this book is just so different from what Anne of Green Gables (plus other the books, of course) is supposed to be. Anne's this stubborn, hotheaded, charming, adventurous and charismatic person, but in this book, she's nothing but a shadow of herself. She's just this weird and precocious (?) child for some reason, and has no real personality of her own.
Seriously, is the authour seriously expecting me to believe Anne never once got into scrapes before Marilla? Or that she's this super smart and Different TM kid that walked and talked (without being motivated to do so, considering she was neglected, as Anne of Green Gables pointed it out) before all of Thomas' babies?
I also don't like the way Mr and Mrs Thomas and their family are written, but I still haven't managed to quite put finger in it. Maybe it's because it's different from what I imagined it'd be, maybe it's because it just doesn't make any sense in my mind. Maybe it's a bit of both, but I just really don't like it that, apparently, they have much older children than Anne and one of them basically raised her (?), I don't like the way Mr Thomas, a drunk, supposedly adored Anne more than some of his boys because she (a five-year-old kid that might as well be ten, by the way the writer describes her) has spirit and understands him, a drunk? Please.
I still haven't finished the book though, so maybe I'll change my mind as the plot moves forward, but as of right now, I just... really don't like Before Green Gables and can't believe these things are considered canon. But then again, fix-it fics are a thing, right?
I've also got my hands on Marilla of Green Gables and I'm not all that excited for it, either. By the looks of it, Marilla is anyone but Marilla. I can hardly see some of the things happening, but well, it's not like I can't give this book a chance. Plus, it might be useful for fic writing, so we'll see.
